My family moved to the United States in 1988,
when I was only seven years old. We came here because we were escaping
from communism. Although I have been a U.S. citizen for many years, I will
always identify with first-generation immigrants because I know
what it's like to come to this country, full of hope and confusion, and to
struggle to fit in. It's hard on your soul, and it takes its toll in ways
that I will never be able to articulate. I will always stand up for the
rights of immigrants in this country, because no matter where they came
from or for what reason, I understand enough of what they are going
through to know that they deserve my deepest respect.
